Charles Lakin Award - Mrs. Brenda Brandt

KMA Article and Video (scroll to the middle of the page)

For the 12th year, KMA and the Green Hills Area Education Agency — in conjunction with the Charles E. Lakin Foundation — recognize elementary and secondary educators for their commitment to providing quality education with the Charles E. Lakin Outstanding Teacher Award.

This year, four teachers — two elementary and two secondary — will each receive $10,000 during a special ceremony at their respective schools. In addition, each recipient’s school district will receive $2,500.

The award is named in honor of the late philanthropist, who created the award in 2008 to recognize teachers who entice kids to come to school and see teaching as a calling, rather than a job.

Instructors who teach within a 40-mile radius of Emerson — Lakin’s hometown — are eligible to be nominated for the award. Nomination forms will be available March 1-31 at KMAland.com. Award winners will be announced in May.

Following this spring, the Lakin Foundation will have awarded $400,000 to area teachers and school districts through the award program.

Last year’s winners included: Michele Hendrickson, Hamburg, elementary; Brock Johnson, Riverside elementary; Amanda Brandon, Riverside secondary; and Josh Abel, Tri-Center secondary.

Eligible school districts include: AHSTW, Atlantic, CAM, Clarinda, East Mills, Essex, Fremont-Mills, Glenwood, Griswold, Hamburg, Red Oak, Riverside, Shenandoah, Sidney, Stanton, South Page, Southwest Valley, Treynor, Tri-Center and Underwood.
