5th Grade Volume Investigations

Fifth graders are studying volume in math. They started with determining the volume can be found by finding the area of the base and multiplying it by the number of layers. The math curriculum asks students to investigate doubling the volume by adjusting the dimensions. According to the numbers, doubling each dimension makes for more volume than double the original volume. Students quickly became curious and wanted to use manipulatives to reassure the numbers. We took it to the 3-D printer. Come to find out 8 black boxes fit in the red box. Curiosity did not stop there. Students wanted to know if they doubled one dimension and halved another if the volume would be the same as the original. Thus, the white box was printed and confirmed their thinkings.
