5th graders have explored gravitational force. They were challenged to design egg drops or contraptions to protect eggs from the gravitational force or impact from hitting the ground. All groups had lids or protective layers on the eggs, so regardless of which way the contraption fell there was padding on the egg. Most groups also created a parachute to reduce slow down the falling, thus reduce the amount of force upon hitting the ground. Four out of six groups were successful, so they are now challenged to design egg cars. The egg cars will be put down a ramp (AKA the playground slide). The new contraptions must be mobile and cannot have a protective layer over the egg. In other words, the egg must be exposed and removable.
