5th graders are studying ecosystems. More specially, they are looking at how adding and taking away living things from an ecosystem can affect the carbon dioxide levels. In a game format, they explored how plants verse animals change the carbon dioxide levels. Students came to the conclusion on their own that plants deduct carbon dioxide from ecosystems and animals add to it. For each living thing added to their ecosystem, they had to move their marker on the carbon dioxide tracker to determine if their carbon dioxide levels were healthy. It was interesting to listen to the students discuss what they needed to add or remove from their ecosystem to maintain a healthy carbon dioxide level.
